About this book
Before Horatio Nelson becomes a naval commander, Robert Southey presents him as a frail boy determined to go to sea. Family stories in Norfolk establish his resolve, while his lonely arrival aboard his uncle's ship shows the cost of leaving home. Service on a merchant vessel in the West Indies, navigation practice on the Thames and a voyage towards the North Pole give the early chapters their practical detail.
Later, disputes over French vessels at Leghorn bring questions of authority and responsibility into focus. Nelson's letters reveal his frustration with officers who wait for instructions when he believes immediate action is needed. Southey openly admires his subject and intends the biography to provide an example for young sailors. Readers can examine both the making of a British admiral and the author's account of leadership, where personal courage, professional knowledge and readiness to answer for decisions carry particular weight.
