About this book

School lessons and private passions occupy very different places in the minds of Kenneth Grahame's young characters. In this 1898 collection of stories about siblings and English country life, Edward studies army uniforms, the narrator claims expertise in American wildlife, and Selina pours her attention into naval history. Her enthusiasm for Nelson turns an October afternoon in the garden into an occasion for remembering Trafalgar.

Grahame follows the children's imaginative logic through their games, grievances and encounters with grown-ups. A visitor's careless sweep of a skirt becomes a serious offence when it knocks over a regiment of tin soldiers; a game of rafts offers another world to inhabit. The humour comes from the weight children give to matters adults treat casually. Readers interested in childhood perspectives will find closely observed rivalries, stubborn loyalties and the pleasure of making a large world out of familiar surroundings.
