About this book

Bedtime prayers, chiming bells and a quarrel between two birds introduce this anthology edited by Kenneth Grahame. Published in 1916, it begins with rhymes for very young children and moves towards poems for those a little older. Flowers, changing seasons, toys and fairy creatures supply many of its subjects. The contents place familiar rhymes beside work by William Blake, William Wordsworth and other poets, giving children several kinds of verse to explore.

Grahame's preface explains his preference for lyrical poetry and language suited to children learning to spell. His note before the first rhymes draws attention to rhythm, melody and the pleasure of sound. Later verses by Shelley give wind and birdsong a larger imaginative scale, with storms, clouds and the sea woven into the speaker's feelings. For families and teachers, the collection offers poems to read aloud and discuss, moving from everyday objects towards more demanding images of nature.
