About this book

A child watching boats from a high window in Venice introduces a world bounded by canals, guarded gates and religious customs. Inside the ghetto, busy shops and crowded squares feel complete to him, even as restrictions shape the lives of the adults around him. Israel Zangwill uses this childhood as a prelude to stories of Jewish thinkers and dreamers across several centuries.

The collection blends historical figures with imagined characters, and its preface openly explains the liberties taken in turning lives into fiction. Spinoza and Heine appear among its subjects, while a later excerpt follows a traveller seeking the Baal Shem and debating learning, piety and divine beauty with a cart driver. Readers can explore how inherited belief meets individual thought, through scenes of everyday community life and conversations about faith, belonging and hopes for change.
