About this book
A ship with a silver swan on its prow arrives in a fjord in Iceland just as Halfred imagines the vessel that could carry him abroad. Gifted at harp playing and feats of arms, he gathers a crew and becomes known for victories in song contests as well as fighting. Felix Dahn's historical tale places this restless poet and Viking in a northern world of the tenth century, where stories of divine favour grow around his life.
The narrator repeatedly questions legends about Halfred while preserving their details, giving the account a mixture of admiration and doubt. Later passages turn from public triumphs to personal sorrow: the young singer Thoril's music brings comfort to Halfred, and their days together include fishing on an island lake.
