About this book
Drug Supplies in the American Revolution is a paper by George B. Griffenhagen. The opening says that at the start of the Revolution, the Colonies were cut off from the source of their usual drug supply, England, and that a few drugs trickled through from the West Indies, but by 1776 there was an acute shortage. The contents list names sections called Privateers to the Rescue, Brisk Business in Boston and Valley Forge, among others.
The paper reports that two days after the battles at Lexington and Concord, the Provincial Congress ordered that a man and horse be made available to transport medicines. The paper records that on April 30, Andrew Craigie was appointed to take care of medical stores and deliver them as ordered. The paper also reports that in January 1777, Robert Bass, an apothecary in Market Street, advertised a quantity of Peruvian Bark, just imported.
