Earthwork out of Tuscany is the 1895 first book by Maurice Hewlett (1861-1923), the English novelist, poet, and essayist who became one of the most popular historical romancers of the Edwardian era. The book is a collection of impressionist travel essays and sketches from Tuscany, blending landscape, Italian art criticism, and short fictional interludes in a mannered prose that announced Hewlett’s lifelong devotion to medieval and Renaissance Italy. The Tuscan material prepared the ground for The Forest Lovers, the 1898 medieval romance that made him famous, and for his Italian novels and the Little Novels of Italy.
