Gudrid the Fair: A Tale of the Discovery of America is a 1918 novel by Maurice Hewlett (1861-1923), the English historical novelist, retelling the Norse Vinland voyages from the Icelandic sagas. The book follows Gudrid Thorbjarnardottir, the far-travelled woman of the Vinland sagas, through her voyages to Greenland and the North American coast, her marriages including that to Thorfinn Karlsefni, and the birth of her son Snorri, the first European child born in America according to the saga record. Hewlett devoted his later career to Norse subjects, producing a sequence of saga novels including The Light Heart and Thorgils. The book renders the spare saga material in novelistic form for English readers and belongs to the twentieth-century English rediscovery of the Norse discovery voyages.
