About this book
The book centres on Eva Litchfield, a writer whose marriage to Nicholas Van Suydam, of the Dutch Van Suydams of Manhattan, is described as doomed to unhappiness. The narrator, addressed in one passage as Mrs. Avery, talks with Gertrude about Eva's fondness for parties and Nicholas's dislike of the literary teas.
In the pages sampled, Gertrude reports that Nicholas's mother noticed Spencer Mapes at one of those teas and has worried about him since. Elsewhere Molly Underhill, stung by a taunt, throws herself into a chair beside the narrator, who has settled in a corner with a book to stay out of an argument. Florence Quincy and other guests discuss Spencer Mapes's intentions toward Eva.
