About this book
In the chapter headed An Awful Grief, a character named Eva sobs, "Must I really go?", while clinging to the spinster. The spinster replies, "Yes, your gran’ther meant every word he said, an’ told me to start you, an’ I’m going to do it!" The text reports that some said it was a pity that Doctor Ludington richly deserved his fate, while others declared that Eva was old enough to know better than to carry on a clandestine love affair with the enemy of the family. Eva is described as freezing and starving, lost in the lonely wood and wandering back and forth beneath the bare trees.
The text says Eva traveled eighteen months abroad with her father and kept up a constant correspondence with her friend Ada Winton. Eva drew rein at the gate and saw a hay wagon lumbering away with youths and maidens, and she thought tearfully, "Perhaps my mysterious lover may be among them!"
