About this book
A six-year-old boy leaves a ruined Vermont home in a pack basket on the back of Eben Holden, the farm hand he calls Uncle Eb. With their dog Fred following, they head toward the St Lawrence valley after the boy loses his parents and older brother in a lake accident. The child remembers the trip through fields and woodland alongside the kindness, unusual stories and musical habits of his guardian.
Published in 1900, Irving Bacheller's historical novel draws its setting from northern farm life and the communities formed by settlers from Vermont. Uncle Eb's speech gives the narrative much of its character, whether he is describing an imaginary woodland creature or talking about loss beside a stove in bitter winter weather. For readers interested in rural American fiction, the book offers a close view of affection, work, religious belief and a young narrator's widening prospects.
