About this book
Eighteen-year-old Judson Pitcher reaches a new town at the end of a Dakota railroad after leaving his home in Ohio. He hopes to see the world, but his first winter away brings deep snow, dangerous encounters and the work of keeping himself and his animals alive. Hayden Carruth presents the adventure as Judson's own account, with the grown man's recollections of his younger fears and mistakes.
Letters to his mother make the isolation especially clear. A dark shape near the barn and a broken clothesline turn ordinary surroundings into sources of alarm, while feeding the stock becomes a test of courage. Wolves and outlaws add more immediate threats. The novel combines frontier survival with the intimate voice of a young man trying to manage practical tasks while his imagination makes every unexplained sound more troubling.
