About this book
Montague Glass's Elkan Lubliner, American was published in Garden City, New York, in 1912. Its contents list seven titles: Noblesse Oblige, Appenweier's Account, A Match for Elkan Lubliner, Highgrade Lines, One of Esau's Fables, A Tale of Two Jacobean Chairs and Sweet and Sour.
Chapter One, Noblesse Oblige, begins with Marcus Polatkin and his partner Philip Scheikowitz in the showroom of their business one June morning, talking about a letter with bad news in it. In another passage a boy named Borrochson arrives with a large bundle and says his father spent the money on a wedding with the landlord's widow. The trip uptown is hard going: conductors refuse them and they end on foot, and at Wooster Street Marcus objects to bringing the boy into the showroom. Elsewhere Volkovisk plays the piano part of a Richard Strauss violin sonata while Rekower takes the violin part, and B. Gans puts a hand on Elkan's shoulder in a passage that mentions an old lady wearing a sheitel.
