About this book
In Oliver Wendell Holmes's novel, a young woman's unusual temperament becomes a test of how people assign moral blame. Elsie Venner draws together a New England community, family anxieties and a speculative idea about influences before birth. Holmes explains in his prefaces that the story uses an imagined medical condition to examine inherited guilt and the religious doctrine of original sin. The opening also observes the manners and fortunes of the region's wealthy social class.
In one scene, old Sophy recounts Elsie's childhood to a minister. Her memories include a frightening quarrel, her father's concern and an unwelcome marriage prospect. The conversation gives the novel both a domestic setting and a problem for religious judgment. Readers interested in the meeting of fiction, medicine and belief can follow how personal testimony complicates abstract claims about responsibility.
