About this book

Asaph Holmes prizes his independence, but his passion for gardening has made his Belleport cottage almost impossible to live in. Seed catalogues, tools and treasured newspaper clippings fill the rooms until he must call on Hannah Dole to restore order. Sara Ware Bassett builds the opening of this New England novel around the comic friction between his untidy enthusiasms and Hannah's brisk efficiency.

Village conversation gives equal attention to gardens and affairs of the heart. Althea Holmes sees signs of affection between Peggy Davidson and Doctor Hollingsworth that leave Asaph astonished, while Lemuel Gill worries about how much they will miss Peggy's visits. Family business, tearooms and marriage belong to the book's social setting. Its humor lies in familiar habits and the different ways neighbors read one another, offering readers a portrait of coastal community life through domestic detail and lively dialogue.
