About this book
Émile Verhaeren by Stefan Zweig considers the poet's relationship to the world of his time, together with the development and inherited traditions of his poetry. The preface reports that the volume appeared simultaneously in German and French four years previously, and says Verhaeren's spreading fame has not brought sufficient recognition in English-speaking countries.
The account characterises Verhaeren as approving of everything in his epoch, including resistance understood as a welcome increase in the fighting force of vitality. The discussion of poetic form says a poem must begin by representing inherited tradition, will achieve a personal form only through youthful revolt, and will later represent an immutable type as that form gradually grows cold and petrifies.
