About this book
This is an account of the life and work of Émile Zola, written by Ernest Alfred Vizetelly and dated 1904, with portraits, views and facsimiles. A dedication to Zola's memory and a line from Diderot about conscience and the verdict of time come before the preface.
In the preface the author says he means to chronicle the chief incidents in Zola's life and to set out the aims he had in view at different periods of his career. Virtually all of Zola's work is listed in the pages that follow, which the author describes as crowded with facts. One passage surveys the literary scene of 1840 and names Balzac, Dumas and Gautier. Another deals with the expurgation of books and the health of a Vizetelly in his seventieth year. A further passage refers to the Rougon-Macquart novels.
