About this book
A conversation at Berneval gives André Gide's portrait of Oscar Wilde its personal focus. Living beside the sea in northern France after prison, Wilde speaks about the changes in his life, his wish to write a play, and the kindness of local people. His account moves between artistic ambition and ordinary encounters: lending Dumas novels to customs officers, celebrating with schoolchildren, and finding welcome in the village church.
Gide records these exchanges as a friend listening closely to a writer reconsidering his work and public reputation. Wilde's remarks on Russian fiction and Flaubert make compassion a question of literary method as well as personal experience. The 1905 English edition adds Stuart Mason's introduction, notes, and bibliography, placing the remembered conversations beside an outline of Wilde's education and writing career.
