About this book

Edith Parker's complaints about her family interrupt a spring walk with her governess beside an English seaport. Eleven years old and quick to insist on her own wishes, Edith finds a patient guide in Emilie Schomberg, who teaches her German, French and music. When the girl refuses to take the route Emilie suggests, an old sailor intervenes and praises the governess's gentle manner. Their conversation makes everyday disagreements the starting point for lessons in consideration.

Mrs. Thomas Geldart's children's story connects its religious ideal of peacemaking with tempers, family life and practical kindness. In a later scene, Edith offers gifts to a fisherman's children and discovers her cat, Muff, in their kitchen. A child's request for a shilling becomes a plan to send the troublesome pet to a relative who loves cats. Readers can explore how this older moral tale uses small exchanges and household difficulties to show children learning to care for others.
