About this book

Six-year-old Nelly arrives at her aunt's house with trunks full of toys and clothes while her parents visit Europe. Her younger cousin Frankie eagerly helps carry her playthings upstairs, but Nelly expects other people to do things for her. Mrs. Gray hopes that sharing a household with her cousins will teach the little visitor to be generous, truthful and willing to help herself.

Madeline Leslie builds this children's story around small domestic encounters and direct lessons in Christian conduct. A toy wagon, an unpacked wardrobe and a story told by Frankie's mother bring the children's different habits into view. Nelly's temper later puts the whole family under strain, and her aunt turns to prayer while struggling to guide her. The story offers a close look at an older approach to children's manners, obedience and family discipline, including punishments that present-day readers may find severe.
