About this book
The title page announces ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTY ILLUSTRATIONS FROM PHOTOGRAPHS for English Cathedrals Illustrated. The introduction says that its pages are an attempt to make the study of the English cathedrals more interesting, and that every ancient building has a life-history of its own. The text says that, if the above dates are correct, it was the Durham architect, and not a Frenchman, who was the first to solve the great problem of mediæval architecture.
The text says that an abbey with estates in almost every county of England never had money to spend on its church. Launcelot Salkeld, the last Prior and the first Dean of Carlisle, is said to have added the charming Renaissance screen on the north side of the tower. The text says that in the seventeenth century the western bays of the Norman nave were pulled down, during the Civil War.
