About this book
C. H. B. Quennell describes the fabric of Norwich Cathedral and gives a brief history of the episcopal see, with forty illustrations. The text says the church was founded by Herbert de Losinga, the first bishop, who moved the see from Thetford to Norwich in 1094. The foundation stone was laid in 1096 on land called Cowholme, meaning a pasture surrounded by water, and the church was dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Among its characteristics the author lists the long nave, the apsidal termination with a procession path, and the remains of the old bishops' chair.
A section on the vault gives a list of subjects bay by bay, such as the Resurrection, the Ascension, the Last Judgment and Bishop Lyhart, the builder of the vault. A later list gives short lives of bishops, among them Richard Courtenay (1412-15), who was nominated by Henry V and was Chancellor of the University of Oxford, and John Wakering (1416-25).
