English Lands, Letters and Kings, vol. 3, subtitled Queen Anne and the Georges, is by Donald Grant Mitchell. A list of titles names, among others, From Celt to Tudor, From Elizabeth to Anne and The Later Georges to Victoria. A letter of dedication to Mrs. Grover Cleveland says that many bookmakers of that early Georgian period covered by this little volume eagerly sought to dignify their opening pages with the name and titles of some high-placed patron or patroness.
The writer speaks of Isaac Watts, saying he was the son of a lodging-house keeper in Southampton and, being a dissenter, was debarred the advantages of a university education. The writer recalls an old cradle hymn with the lines Hush, my dear, lie still and slumber, Holy angels guard thy bed. A chapter marked V speaks of David Hume as philosopher and historian, kindly natured, witty, serene, with a capacity for large and enduring friendships.
