About this book
Wakeman's Handbook of Irish Antiquities is by W. F. Wakeman, and this third edition is edited by John Cooke, Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland. The book describes Dun Ængus, on the south coast of Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands, built on the very edge of sheer cliffs 250 to 300 feet in height. Petrie is quoted as describing Dun Ængus as the most magnificent barbaric monument now extant in Europe.
The castles of Ireland are described as exceedingly numerous, varying from the single keep-tower of the predatory chieftain to the defensive fortresses erected under the Anglo-Norman barons and their successors. The book names Callernish, on the west coast of the Island of Lewis, as one of the most remarkable examples of a stone circle and lines known in the British Isles, with a circle about 40 feet in diameter formed by twelve stones round a central one 17 feet high.
