About this book
English Men of Letters is by Alfred Ainger. The prefatory note says that the chief, and almost sole, source of information concerning Crabbe is the Memoir by his son prefixed to the collected edition of his poems in 1834. The prefatory note also says that comparatively few letters of Crabbe's have been preserved, but that a small and interesting series will be found in the Leadbeater Papers (1862).
The text says that the three following years, during which Crabbe remained at Woodbridge, gave him the opportunity of occasional visits, and that he proceeded to celebrate Mira in occasional verse. The text says that a Lady's Magazine had offered a prize for the best poem on the subject of Hope, which Crabbe was so fortunate as to win. At Pucklechurch, George says he will venture a good sum that Crabbe will be assisting him ten years hence, and Crabbe's answer is "Ten weeks".
