About this book
English Travellers of the Renaissance, by Clare Howard, is an essay written in 1908-1910 while the writer was studying at Oxford. The preface says the book aims no further than to describe one phase of Renaissance travel in clear and sharp outline, with sufficient illustration to embellish but not to clog the main ideas. The text describes injunctions to run ahead of one's fellows on landing to get the best quarters at the inn, and at Port Jaffa to secure the best ass.
The text says the Colloquies of Erasmus exploded the idea that it was the height of piety to have seen Jerusalem. The text reports that Sir William Temple, after some years spent as Ambassador to the Netherlands, decided that Holland was a place where a man would choose rather to travel than to live. The text also says that people with cabinets of butterflies, miniatures, shells, ivory, or Indian beads were pestered by tourists asking to see their treasures.
