About this book
Hildreth's Japan as It Was and Is carries the subtitle A Handbook of Old Japan, Volume 1, and contains accounts of trade and encounters aboard ships. Pinto describes small skiffs bringing men who courteously greet the people aboard a junk and ask where the vessel has come from. One visitor says that the island’s lord would permit trade if the customary duties were paid.
An account of a dispute describes Japanese men taking a governor prisoner and obtaining liberty to depart and indemnity for their losses. The text says that the Dutch assented despite their superior force because they feared reprisals in Japan.
