Son of the poet Petko Slaveykov, he drew on Nietzsche, Heine, and Goethe while shaping a national literature. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize shortly before his death in exile. Pencho Slaveykov

Pencho Slaveykov developed a modern Bulgarian poetic voice through lyric reflection, philosophical ambition, and engagement with European literary culture. Epical songs represents an English rendering of work associated with his collection Epicheski pesni, which appeared in successive Bulgarian editions around the turn of the twentieth century.
