About this book
The collection presents poems translated from the Russian, with an introduction and notes, and its contents group poems under autobiographical, narrative, nature and love headings. The contents list My Pedigree and My Monument among the autobiographical poems, alongside narrative titles including The Outcast, The Black Shawl and The Roussalka. The translator describes the translation as literal and says the punctuation, especially the poet’s frequently used dots, has therefore been retained as part of the art.
The speaker in My Pedigree rejects the descriptions of court coachman, assessor, academician and professor, declaring himself simply a citizen of Russia. The commentary credits Byelinsky with teaching the commentator to understand lines about the poet’s call as a marvel of classic, Greek art.
