About this book
Courtly pride can turn a feast into a quarrel in this collection of medieval legends. In the Nibelung section, Chriemhild and Brunhild dispute the standing of their husbands while watching contests at Worms. Their argument brings questions of loyalty, rank and personal honour into an otherwise festive scene. Elsewhere, the contents lead through Dietrich's adventures, Beowulf's encounters, the heroes around Charlemagne and stories associated with Arthur and the Holy Grail.
Adapted from Wilhelm Wägner's work by M. W. Macdowall and edited by W. S. W. Anson, the volume presents these traditions in prose. Its introduction treats legends as clues to earlier customs and beliefs, while acknowledging that poetic accounts can alter historical chronology. That combination gives readers a way to follow the stories and consider what they reveal about the societies that told them.
