About this book

A princess and a viking's son share their childhood in Hilding's garden, where lessons, games and stories of the gods bring them together. As Ingeborg and Frithiof grow older, affection meets a barrier of royal rank. Florence Holbrook pairs their story with an adaptation of Beowulf, presenting northern legends in a form intended for children.

The tales move through forests, royal halls and sea voyages, mixing prose with brief passages of verse. Advice from King Bele and Thorsten gives friendship, fair government and the wise use of strength a place beside physical courage. The contents also introduce Beowulf's encounters with Grendel and a mountain dragon. Readers looking for a first acquaintance with these legends can follow short chapters in which heroic deeds are linked to questions of loyalty, reputation and responsibility.
