About this book
The introduction follows William Petty from the Romsey Grammar School to studies at Caen in Normandy, where he supported himself through a little trade while learning. The introduction describes further studies at Utrecht, Leyden, Amsterdam, and Paris during an absence of three years.
The discussion of city populations presents an answer to Monsieur Auzout concerning the numbers of people in London, Paris, Rouen, and Rome. The population discussion reports Monsieur Auzout's allegation of an authentic account giving houses in Paris and approximately eighty thousand families living within them. A proposal concerning the Corporation calls for sufficient labour and suitable work for poor people who are or shall be able to labour or do any work.
