About this book
William Ridgeway's The Origin of Metallic Currency and Weight Standards was printed at Cambridge in 1892. The title page names him as Professor of Greek in Queen's College, Cork, and carries a Greek epigraph. His preface calls the book an attempt to arrive at the origin of metallic currency and weight standards by the Comparative Method.
One passage draws on Crawfurd and Marsden for the Archipelago and Sumatra: the picul as a natural load, a bahara of 396 lbs. in some places and 560 lbs. in others, grains of rice used to weigh gold, and gold dust used as currency instead of coin. Another sets Mommsen against Mr Soutzo on whether the Roman as was reduced all at once or gradually before 264 B.C. A third notes the gold rings found by Dr Schliemann at Mycenae, which Ridgeway thinks were probably made on a standard of 135 grains troy.
