About this book

Trade between countries supplies the starting point for John Stuart Mill's five essays on economic reasoning. Published in 1844, the collection considers how the benefits of commerce are divided, how consumption affects production, and how economists should define their subject. The opening essay develops the idea of comparative cost through exchanges of iron, cotton, cloth and corn, showing how differences in the use of labour and capital can make trade advantageous to both sides.

Other questions turn on the meaning of productive work. Mill compares a musical performance with the making of an instrument, then considers whether acquired skill should count as wealth. These concrete examples give substance to arguments about lasting resources, immediate enjoyment, profits and interest. Readers interested in economic thought can follow a writer testing his definitions and tracing the consequences of apparently simple distinctions.
