About this book
The Contest in America is a piece by John Stuart Mill, reprinted from Fraser's Magazine. The writer says that the fear has not been realized that the only two first-rate Powers who are also free nations would take to tearing each other in pieces.
On the writer's side, such a war would have been a war in alliance with, and, to practical purposes, in defence and propagation of, slavery. The text points to the letters of the Times' correspondent, Mr. Russell, who in one of his recent letters names the end of next summer as the period by which, if the war has not sooner terminated, it will have assumed a complete anti-slavery character. The writer says he cannot join those who cry Peace, peace, and cannot wish that the war should not have been engaged in by the North.
