Its hero is a bored young man of fashion who, out of pride and idleness, rejects the love of the sincere country girl Tatyana and kills his friend Lensky in a needless duel. Years later he meets Tatyana again, now a great lady, and the tables are turned. Told in the sparkling, tightly rhymed stanza that now bears Pushkin’s name, the poem paints a whole picture of Russian society while telling a story of love missed and regretted.
