About this book
An Outline of Russian Literature is by the Hon. Maurice Baring and was first printed 1914/15. The text says that throughout the poem Nature plays an active part in the events, and that when Igor is defeated, the grasses bend with pity and the trees are bowed to the earth with grief. A transcript of the poem, made probably at the end of the fourteenth century, was first discovered in 1795 by Count Musin-Pushkin and first published in 1800, the text says. The text says that up to the twelfth century Russian life was concentrated in the splendid and prosperous centre of Kiev.
The text names Belinsky (1811-1847) as the real founder of Russian æsthetic, literary, and journalistic criticism, of humble extraction, almost entirely self-educated, who lived in want and poverty and ill-health.
