About this book
A legal dispute between father and son becomes a test of religious certainty in Plato's dialogue. Socrates meets Euthyphro outside the King Archon's court in Athens, where both men have business. Facing a charge of impiety himself, Socrates asks the confident diviner to explain what makes an action pious. Euthyphro's decision to prosecute his father after a man's death gives their discussion an immediate human stake.
The conversation moves from particular examples to the difficulty of finding a definition that holds in every case. Disagreement among the gods complicates an appeal to divine approval, while ordinary acts of counting and measuring sharpen the contrast with disputes about justice. In Benjamin Jowett's translation, the exchange offers readers a compact example of philosophical questioning, with claims repeatedly tested rather than simply accepted. Its interest lies in how a familiar moral conviction can become uncertain under careful examination.
