About this book
Evangelists of Art: Picture-Sermons for Children is credited to Rev. James Patrick. The contents list picture titles such as, among others, Christ in the Temple with W. Holman Hunt, Luther at Erfürt with Sir J. Noël Paton and Hercules Wrestling with Death for the Body of Alcestis with Lord Leighton. The text describes a picture in which we see the scaffolding of the masons, and one of the cranes by which they raised the stones into position. In the picture, the Rabbi nearest us has a specially withered face and eyes that have become sightless with age.
A man says he saw Argyll sleeping as pleasantly as ever a man did, within an hour of eternity. Argyll's place of imprisonment may still be seen in Edinburgh Castle, and the bed-chamber in Mr. Ward's picture has thick walls, a bare floor and a heavy vaulted roof, all of stone. The text says the battered and blood-stained crown shows that the highest earthly ambitions have their pains and miseries even when they are most successful, and that the varied rubbish shows that this world's possessions are not worth much after all.
