About this book
A wealthy suitor finds an outspoken opponent in Eveline Mandeville, whose father thinks property and prospects should settle her choice of husband. Eveline prefers Charles Hadley and distrusts Willard Duffel, the man her father favors. An overheard conversation raises her suspicions about a secret gang of horse thieves, bringing a criminal mystery into the family dispute. Alvin Addison builds this novel around the distance between outward respectability and personal character.
Duffel presses his claim to Eveline while she challenges his account of her father's wishes. Her insistence on her own consent gives the romance a sharp conflict over authority and freedom of choice. Readers can approach the story for its heated exchanges, accusations and shifting claims of innocence, as well as its view of marriage as a decision that wealth alone cannot justify.
