About this book

Back from architectural study in Paris, Evelina finds that her friend Jane Mathers has a mission ready for her. Jane wants to change the terms on which women choose their partners, and Evelina's own feelings make that assignment difficult. Her resentment of the guardianship arranged by her late father sits beside affection for the people of Glendale, Tennessee, and memories of an encounter with Polk Hayes before she left for college.

Maria Thompson Daviess tells this novel through Evelina's lively first-person account, mixing arguments about women's independence with garden planting, household affairs and romantic uncertainty. Evelina measures her busy days against a promise to help other women claim the right to choose their mates. Readers interested in women's suffrage and changing expectations of marriage will find those questions expressed through comic self-examination and the small social demands of a Tennessee community.
