About this book
Explorers of the Dawn is a book by Mazo de la Roche, with a foreword by Christopher Morley. The narrators, looking out of the window on a morning in mid-spring, discover a tall old man in a brilliant-hued, flowered dressing-gown striding up and down the small enclosure of the Pegg's front garden. Mary Ellen, supported by her broom, stares out of the window and says the old man is Mr. Pegg's own father, come home from somewheres in th' Indies.
Mr. Watlin shouts that Carrot Bill is his uncle, and says there is nobody in Kent who can bunch carrots like him. A girl who says she is glad after all to be safe out of Wumble Pool is asked her name by Martindale, and answers that she does not know her name rightly, for she was stole by gipsies when she was but two days old.
