About this book

Bob, Son of Battle is by Alfred Ollivant, and the contents list names, among others, parts titled The Coming of the Tailless Tyke, The Shepherds' Trophy and The Black Killer. The text describes a young dog who combined a strange sobriety, an admirable patience, and says Parson Leggy, reckoned the best judge of a sheep or sheep-dog 'twixt Tyne and Tweed, summed him up in the one word “Genius.” A group has gathered of a night round the fire in the Sylvester Arms, and some one begins with “Well, and what o' oor Bob, Mr. Thornton?” One man only, little M'Adam, never joined in the chorus of admiration, sitting always alone in the background and listening with an incredulous grin on his sallow face.

One night, a woman alone in the kitchen looks up and sees, to her horror, a dim, moonlike face glued against the windowpane, and she recognizes it as M'Adam.
