About this book
Henry F. French's Farm Drainage was printed in New York in 1860, and its title page describes it as covering "the principles, processes, and effects of draining land with stones, wood, plows, and open ditches, and especially with tiles." It lists tables of rain-fall, evaporation, filtration, excavation and capacity of pipes, as well as the cost and number of tiles to the acre.
In one passage the author says he refers often to English writers and opinions because drainage is understood and practiced better in England than anywhere else, and thanks the engineer J. Bailey Denton. A passage on tiles says they are usually cut fourteen inches long and shorten in drying and burning to about twelve and a half, so that 1,000 tiles may be expected to lay 1,000 feet of drains. It also gives a memorandum made at the residence of Mr. Thomas Crisp at Butley Abbey, in Suffolk.
