About this book
Samuel J. Record, assistant professor of forest products at Yale University, wrote this book, a first edition of 1914, on how wood behaves under load. It lists the properties it considers: stiffness and elasticity, tensile strength, compressive or crushing strength, shearing strength, bending strength, toughness, hardness, cleavability and resilience. A section on fundamental considerations and definitions explains terms such as stress and strain.
The text points out that individual pieces of wood vary a great deal, so the figures in its tables are indications rather than fixed values. It also covers shrinkage as wood dries, noting that shrinkage along the growth rings is fully twice that toward the centre, and why some posts and timbers split. The title promises methods of timber testing, and the index names woods such as Douglas fir and white fir.
