About this book

A fogbound Atlantic steamer provides the first scene of Ethel Gwendoline Vincent’s travel journal, published in 1886. Sailing toward America, she records shipboard entertainments, the arrival of a pilot and the lights of New York before describing customs inspection and hotel arrangements. Her account pays attention to the practical details of travel, including meal charges and the routines that shape a visitor’s first experience of a city.

The contents trace a route through North America, New Zealand, Australia, Java and India. A later passage follows the Queensland coast, where coral reefs make navigation difficult and the ship anchors until moonrise. Vincent also notes red ant hills at Albany Pass and boats gathering around the steamer at Thursday Island. Readers interested in nineteenth-century travel will find a dated sequence of personal observations, with transport, scenery and everyday arrangements sharing the page.
