About this book
The title page reads Newfoundland to Cochin China by the Golden Wave, New Nippon, and the Forbidden City. The title page also lists reports on British trade and interests in Canada, Japan, and China. The opening note says the favourable reception of “40,000 Miles over Land and Water” has induced the writer to yield to the kind wishes of many Friends and Constituents, and to record the impressions of a second circle round the world.
In a first-person account, the party finds a ramshackle country buggy in which to drive fourteen miles to Sydney, and the driver, the local constable, negotiates the worst places, the holes and rocks and frail wooden bridges, with great care. The text says the banks for some miles above Tientsin are lined with these ugly sampans, their tattered sails hanging in ribbons, and that in these sampans generations are born, live, and die.
