About this book

In Sydney Harbour in January 1802, a whaling ship waits for its captain while a courtship ashore tries the patience of his mate. Captain Charles Foster has brought government stores to the settlement and fallen in love with Dorothy, the daughter of an important official. Work keeps him occupied, and a rival captain's frequent visits make him fear that he is losing her favour.

Louis Becke links this romantic contest to the business of ships, cargoes and privateers in a short historical sea story. Dorothy enjoys provoking Foster, especially when she reads him a letter from the Dutch captain Portveldt, whose boasts turn their personal rivalry into a threat at sea. Harbour signals, watchful sailors and the formalities of colonial society give the exchanges a particular setting. Readers interested in maritime fiction can find here a compact tale in which professional ambition and wounded pride become tangled with the wish to marry.
