About this book

Debt at Grantley Hall casts a shadow over Jack Mackenzie's prospects while he serves at sea. In Gordon Stables's historical sea story for younger readers, the young naval officer's family pride and affection for Gerty Keane meet the practical calculations of a London solicitor. Gerty's father holds a large claim against the Mackenzie estate and has a titled husband in mind for his daughter, giving the opening scenes a tension between love, loyalty and money.

Aboard the Tonneraire, Jack's command brings the story into the daily life of a British warship. Storms delay the fleet, officers share jokes, and the surgeon and sailors care kindly for wounded French prisoners. The narrator links naval discipline with courage and consideration for others.
