About this book
Frederic Lord Leighton, by Ernest Rhys, is an illustrated record of the life and work of the Late President of the Royal Academy of Arts. The text says Frederic Leighton was born on the 3rd of December, 1830, at Scarborough, the son of a medical practitioner. The text describes a picture that startled the Royal Academy as the work of an unknown young artist of twenty-five, painted chiefly in Rome.
The text has a chapter called Discourses on Art, which turns to the late President's Addresses and Discourses on Art. Titles named include Cain and Abel, Moses Views the Promised Land, Samson and the Lion and Samson Carrying the Gates. A numbered list of works includes the Island of Ægina, Thebes, the Coast of Ægina, buildings on the Coast of the Island of Rhodes, and Assouan, Egypt.
